Introduction: This was such an unexpectedly fun storytime! The kids got really into acting like goats, LOVED the goat puppet (TBH, it’s one of my favorites, too), and loved telling me that they knew the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff when we began our fingerplay. We sang our opening song, and then got started!
Sign of the Day: Goat
Book: Goat’s Coat by Tom Percival

This book is pretty darn cute and has major Rabbit’s Gift by George Shannon vibes. That story, which originated from China centers on how good deeds can be paid forward and benefit us all. Similarly in Goat’s Coat, goat uses his coat to selflessly help others, who in turn help him later on. This is a bit of a longer book, but by reading it early on in storytime and just having a more relaxed group of kids that day allowed us to get through it!
Song: Have You Ever Seen a Silly Goat?
Song: We Wiggle and Wiggle and Stop.
We wiggle and wiggle and stop!
We wiggle and wiggle and stop!
We wiggle and wiggle and wiggle and wiggle
and wiggle and wiggle and STOP!
Repeat with: Jump, Spin, Clap, Stomp, and Stretch
Book: Through With the Zoo by Jacob Grant

This is a cute little tale of a goat at a petting zoo who really just wants to be left alone. Finally, he takes matters into his own hooves and runs away to live with other animals who don’t get hugged as much. Soon, goat realizes he misses the pets and hugs he got from the children at the petting zoo and returns. This book got a nice reaction from the kids, who were guessing what animals would appear next, and a good chuckle from the parents when talking about the grabby hands of kids.
Rhyme: Billy Goats Three
Trip-Trap, Trip-Trap,
Billy Goats three!
Hide by the bridge,
Where the Troll can’t see.
When the Troll walks by,
They’ll jump up and say
“Leave us alone!”
And the Troll runs away!
Felt: The Greedy Goat by Petr Horáček

I LOVE Petr Horáček, and honestly, this story is the entire reason I wanted to do a goat themed storytime! This story features a greedy goat who is tired of eating grass and herbs and wants a taste of something different. However, eating the cat’s milk, the dog’s food, the pig’s potato peelings, the farmer’s wife’s flowers, the farmer’s daughter’s shoe, and the farmer’s underwear makes goat sick. All the animals/people get new food/items and goat feels better…until she eats the farmer’s boot.
Closing: We closed out with our goodbye song and then went on to craft time!
